Multisorb Technologies Introduces Integrated Sorbent Solutions Program

Hervé Corre Discusses “Systems Approach” at EMBALLAGE 2006

Paris, France – November 20, 2006 – Multisorb Technologies announces the Sorbent Solutions Program to the European pharmaceutical industry at booth # 6 G 079 at Emballage 2006 in Paris, France. Utilizing a “systems” approach, Multisorb’s program offers a complete solution for cost-effective pharmaceutical moisture management, helping to ensure protection of brand integrity, increased shelf life and product efficacy.

“When determining a degradation-prevention program, it’s critical that manufacturers consider the entire process - from pharmaceutical formulation to the packaging environment and to the distribution chain,” says Hervé Corre, Sales Engineer for Pharmaceutical Markets. “The best approach, and the one that Multisorb is committed to, is one that considers the knowledge and experience of packaging engineers, formulation chemists, analytical chemists, and the sorbent supplier.”

At Emballage, Corre offers additional insights regarding this approach:

How can moisture management be integrated into a company’s packaging?
Choosing packaging components requires careful strategy and consideration of the “big picture.” Calculating every aspect of degradation with a modeling system and a knowledgeable partner can lead to a more shelf-stable and safer product. Multisorb counsels its customers throughout the entire process, including everything from customer consultation to sorbent technology, insertion equipment and technical support.

Can a sorbent solution be customized for a specific need?
Moisture control can and should be customized depending on the needs of the application. For instance, a pseudo-empirical modeling program can help determine the exact amount of sorbent required to protect packaged pharmaceutical products from chemical and/or physical degradation. This service can allow packaging engineers and formulation chemists to quickly understand what their theoretical sorbent requirement will be for a proposed package, allowing them to reach a stability solution faster and speed time to market.

What are some of the future trends anticipated for sorbent technologies?
Respiratory drug delivery systems that employ dry powder inhalation (DPI) devices are a significant new trend, offering clinical benefits, dosage control, and patient convenience. "The choice of sorbent is crucial because proper desiccation is an integral part of DPI device functioning. Packaging components that respond to changes in the headspace of packaging relative to outside conditions can be an ideal solution and optimize conditions for drug delivery," says Corre. “When evaluating the desiccation requirements for inhalation devices, pharmaceutical manufacturers should consider the sum of interactions, including drug formulation, device, and packaging. They must also consider all moisture sources, in order to make the best decision regarding the most appropriate sorbent technology.”
