Multisorb Introduces Desiccant Integration Approaches to Preserve the Function of Respiratory Drug Devices and their Drug Product Formulations - New Generation of Multiform Coated Solid Form Sorbents Provide Enhanced Protection for Reservoir Dry Powder Inhalation Devices
Buffalo, NY - April 27, 2007
Multisorb Technologies, a global leader in cutting-edge active packaging technologies, introduces innovative drop-in and fit-in desiccant integration approaches for effective and customized moisture regulation in respiratory drug delivery (RDD) devices or dosage packaging.
Dry Powder Inhalers (DPI), in particular, often require customized desiccants to manage moisture to prevent particle hydration and subsequent agglomeration, while simultaneously maintaining a moisture balance to avert the effects of triboelectrification. DPIs deliver drug formulations in two distinct formats, pre-measured and reservoir, each with highly specific moisture management needs.
In the pre-measured format, medicine is contained in blisters, capsules, or other cavities, which are inserted into the device. Once a patient uses all the doses, they discard the device. Multisorb’s drop-in desiccant integration approach provides moisture management for this format, maintaining the efficacy of the pre-measured drug doses in secondary packaging.
By contrast, sorbents can be manufactured in a variety of shapes and sizes to “fit in” the design of reservoir DPI devices, which provide continued dosing until the reservoir is depleted. Multisorb offers new-generation Multiform Coated Solid Form (CSF) sorbents, which are particularly well suited for reservoir applications as they can easily be integrated into DPI designs. If there is an available cavity inside a particular DPI device, this CSF sorbent can be customized to fit inside it, creating an “onboard” solution for the containment and subsequent aerosolization of the DPI drug product formulation. The flexibility in design and form allows Multiform CSF sorbents to significantly increase the level of functional moisture management per unit volume, enhancing the efficacy of pharmaceutical formulations inside the DPI system.
“Desiccants are an important part of any DPI system and choosing the right form and integration approach is crucial,” says Adrian Possumato, global manager, pharmaceutical market, Multisorb Technologies. “The flexibility offered by Multisorb’s new drop-in and fit-in integration approaches allows pharmaceutical manufacturers to realize the benefits of customized desiccant solutions for their respiratory drug delivery applications that can provide moisture management within a specific relative humidity range or a specific steady-state relative humidity condition within all types of DPI devices and/or dosage packaging.”
Editor’s Note: Multisorb Technologies will showcase CSF sorbents at Interphex 2007, April 24-26 at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York, Booth #2555.
